I use KeePass to keep track of the various usernames and passwords I use. I generally use the same password on a majority of sites and change it regularly — I know bad idea.

I like KeePass because it can also generate good passwords for you. Things like !)(*)@LLLJDLKSJDIIijsladksjiiisdjsldasjLKJl##33 if you like. Then you do not need to remember the password you just log into your keypass file and tell it to auto type or copy and paste like I do.

Are there any reasons to use it over a text pad? Yeah. Security. The database your files are held in is a KDBX file and is incrypted. I am told this is VERY secure. So secure that when you forget your master password you are screwed.

I keep my KDBX file in my dropbox so that it is on all of my machines. It is easy to get to and easy to open.

I just need to remember my master password soon.

Update…

I figured it out my keepass password

Stealing from customers? Who would do that?

If you really want to alienate your customer base you could try stealing from them… It is not a new idea mind you:

Look at the names on that report. Buy.com, 1800 flowers.com etc.

You have visited these sites and they have tried to steal from you by offering coupons and the like at the end of your shopping cart experience. If you enter your email the retailer gives this company your CC# and they ding you with a monthly subscription.

Credit Card numbers?

Yeah I usually suggest that a site owner not capture CC# and instead use something like paypal. This seems obvious that you should not capture this information and SHARE it, but I guess that cannot be assumed anymore.

I really think using something like paypal.com has too many benefits to overlook. You really have to drive some real traffic to need a custom CC processing system outside of paypal. The fees associated with paypal are worth it IMO.

What is the point

Do not steal from your customers and be careful of anything that may alienate them. Things like too many ads, ads of the wrong type or even other users that cause a problem should be dealt with immediately.

In the WEB 460 class I am teaching at DeVry we are changing the rules a bit. We are working on a collaborative ecommerce site and in doing so we needed to have some sort of central repository. So we went with Git. Well Git has no central repo, so how does that work? Really we are using github.com and Git and git extensions altogether. I made a couple videos to show how:
