21Dec OpenDNS vs Google Public DNS
I started using Google Public DNS the day I found out about it from DLS here. I have used open dsn in the past and I use that as my default at home. Why use both? How?
Why use both
Open DNS does a lot of protection stuff. It protects my 8.75 year old from going to a bad site, it can prevent me from going to a phishing site. It also protects me from downloading any torrents or fun stuff like that. So not so great. Sure I can adjust my settings for open DNS, but it affects the whole network so now my daughter is open to attack again. What to do?
Google Public DNS on the other hand protects me from nothing. The idea is that it is faster than cox.net’s DNS service and I believe it. If you need some proof just check here.
How to use both
On each machine I want to use open dns I simply open the control panel, network settings find my adapters and change it’s tcp/ip settings from automatically detect dns (or nothing in there) to open dns’s settings. 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. That is it for my daughters machine.
What about the other machines? For all of the other machines I change the setting at the router. I use the least obtrusive here (Google) 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 . On my laptop I also go ahead and set them for its Internet Connection too.
How can I tell
You really wont notice a speed difference of any sort. It was interesting that youtube.com started to act slow when I went with Google DNS – they own YouTube.com. The neat thing with both services is that they are dedicated to keeping dns up to date. Cox.net treats this as a secondary concern. They do not even do it themselves and are not proactive at all.
