20Jan Windows Vista printing to XP Printers
I just picked up a laptop for my daughter to use at time4learning.com and it has vista installed on it. Pretty cool laptop. it has a remote IN it (like it pops out like a PCMCIA card). it came with a bluetooth mouse, wireless N and all that laptop case and two power supplies. Pretty neat and overall I am happy.
I did have vista crash about 100 times so far, but that has been over 24 hours, so not too bad
Anyway all of my printers are in the den connected to an XP machine. I got the two machines networked and all of that, but I couldnt get to the printers. I would see them and click connect and get access denied. so vista could not connect to my xp printers. Then I found the following article: http://www.kevinyank.com/blog/archives/connect-to-a-network-printer-on-a-windows-xp-server-in-windows-vista and I was saved!
Thanks and here are the steps in case the referenced site goes down:
Here are the exact steps that worked for me:
Download the Windows Vista printer driver for the printer
(Extract the drivers to a temp folder)
Open the Printers from the Windows Vista Control Panel – Add printer
Click Add Port…, select Local Port, then click New Port…
For the port name, enter exactly the network path and share name of your printer (e.g. \\RECEPTION\Samsung SCX-4×16 Series).
Click OK, and double-check that this new port is selected with the checkbox next to it.
Click OK to close the printer properties.
