24Aug What an accomplishment.
It seems no matter how far you travel in life there is always someone who has gone farther. You could stop now then, but you would always be looking at the rear of the same person. Are you OK with that?
Accomplish something, MBA, Master Mason, Doctorate, PMP certification etc and as soon as you climb to that higher rung you will look out and see your view obscured by those who have come before you. In most cases your view will be blocked by those who have made it farther than you – why bother? You might not. You may have obtained all that you will in life and you are comfortable with the rear you now see in front of you – for shame.
The real challenge is recognizing that this is the process. On the way to the top of your game you are going to follow someone else’s footsteps for a long period of that time. These challenges you now face are necessary to accomplishing what you have set out for. And to look up and see someone who has accomplished that and more is a step in the goal, not a view blocking obstacle.
I have recently been trying to do some good work in the lodge. Each time I accomplish a goal I stop and realize how many have done this before me. I am challenged by the current orators that also contribute to the task and impressed by how well they do and how much they are able to accomplish. This sticks out as something that could be a determent. Why bother when there are already so many able men to do the work?
It selfish I guess. I gain personal gratification from the work. I take the accomplishment home with me and it enriches my life. I enjoy it. Little of my professional work before has been as rewarding as my work in the lodge.
Many have done better and much more, but I am on my way.
