Converting .mod to .mpg or .wmv

I purchased a JVC HDD camcorder the other day and it records video in .MOD format. This was rather frustrating because this format isnt widely used by video editing software.

It turns out that .mod is really just a Mpeg2 compressed file so you can rename it to MPG and it will work assuming you have the codec on your machine. What codec? The ac3 code from here:
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

I had tried about 50 programs to convert these files in one step and could find a way. Using the included software from JVC only recodes the file from MOD to MPG which is a waste. And then I really want them in WMV format (dont ask why).

So now it is two easy steps. rename the files, and then encode them as I desire or I can leave them as MPEG.

I hope this helps someone else that has purchased the JVC HDD Everio camcorder. It is an awesome little machine for what it does. I wish the startup time was quicker, but it is still twice as fast as any tape based unit.

So anyone want to point me to some archival quality dvds? I need some that arent necessarily able to play in my dvd player, but are 4.7 g or 8.5 and will last 100 years in a cabinet.
