If you visited southern Arizona you would want to visit two caves. Kartchner Caverns and Colossal Caves.

The two caves couldn’t be more different. We visited both in one day in our RV and it was interested to see the complete change from only a few miles. Kartchner is a living cave. Everything is wet. It is also very controlled. The guide is a scientist (in this case a biologist). Colossal is dead, dry and the tour guide was a dorky.. well NOT scientist. Although for some reason I bet he shares a lot in common with certain T.S. I know.

OK.. But Colossal was totally worth it. You could touch the cave a little. You had to duck in places to avoid hitting your head. It was like a real cave. Kartchner was so controlled and certainly more magnificent, but you couldnt touch anything. You were warned for litterally 2 minutes about LINT. I can totally appreciate the concern and we packed our coats and it was freezing just because we didnt want the detergent or oil to get all over anything.

What would I suggest? Do both in one day. Dont skip one over the other. Kartchner is more open and certainly more appropriate for anyone concerned about stairs or any elevation changes. Colossal for the person who can handle 363 stairs (up and down – not all up – why dont we realize this?) is also worth the admission.
