01Sep Work Breakdown Structures
I have WBS’s coming out my ears at the moment. I have taken several PMP course during my MBA and I am back now for more PM training. WBS’s are the center point of effective project management – but how are they used?
Some say as a checklist. Others as the guiding light. I like network diagrams, but they provide different information in a different manner. Most of the WBSs we create will be small and wont have too many WPs – so I wonder at the value. But I also realize from an external audit standpoint we canot proceed without them.
It is certainly an interesting problem to address and something that I will be able to incorporate into work, school and any new projects I take on. I just think that an initial push in the development of some of the required documentation would be helpful and sometimes it is hard to get the idea across to the teams that these things are necessary in the long run.
