I love this thing. I am in the process of converting my Hi8 tapes onto DVD and the Sony DVDirect makes it so easy. The neatest part is that is senses when there isnt a signal and it pauses the recording.

That is cool. I dont have to watch the videos or wait for it to be over (to avoid recording nothing). Just press play then record and I am off. Sometimes when I have 1 DVD spanning two tapes and the 2nd tape is going to go past the end of the dvd I need to pay attention, but that is the only catch.

I have already tested the DVDs to AVI and MPEG using DVD to DVIX and it works great. Although I have about $1K worth of equipment now sitting new in my living room – it seems worth it. I am selling the “old” stuff on ebay.
